Just as the Messiah sing-along makes high art accessible to the common person, so our high praise needs to encourage the lowliest to join in.

In reality the gospel is all about speed limits and hiring police officers because one who has been redeemed by it is in a position to deliberate on such things.

None of us could foresee what began as a friendly party with a $500 sound system mushrooming into a $2,500 CD release showcase including staging, lights, security guards, special event insurance, 2-way radios, T-shirts, tables, bottled water and a Port-A-Potty.

Christians have gathered together to make a mark on culture, and now the mark is on us in the form of a big, round bull's-eye.

This is actually Christian music the way I remember it. In the concession tent you can even buy tie-dye and beads. I think about my bell-bottoms and wonder what became of them.

I worry about a schism that is developing where Christian music becomes more and more spiritually elite, while Christians in culture become more and more artistically elite. And I wonder about who and what is getting lost in the middle.

If we are going to lead with our music and expect our witness to follow, then there has to be something real coming along at some point.

The professor pointed out that this was like Jesus pulling us aside when we are worried about our own sense of holiness being offended by the unrighteousness of the world around us, and gently--or maybe not so gently--correcting our spiritual pride and selfishness.

Aren’t all those smiling people on the covers of Christian books telling us how we, too, can get it right? If we didn’t worship at the altar of “getting it right,” there wouldn’t be a market for half this stuff.

It began with a mighty rushing wind. It blew down trees, knocked over power poles, scattered semi’s like toy trucks kicked over on the freeways, and robbed electricity from millions of southern California homes. It was one of the worst windstorms to hit the area in recorded history.

Learning to employ our minds in the activity of thinking about God all the time is one of our primary delights as Christians. This is not one more thing to do; it’s the thing you do while you are doing everything else.

It’s as if, in a time of culture wars pitting Christians against the world, Jars of Clay has slipped behind the lines and is playing in the world’s camp. We need to back off, and let this thing happen. Pray if you will, but please, don’t go to hear Jars of Clay at a club and cheer for Jesus. This isn’t a contest. There are no sides. There are only sinners and a gospel.
