Secret Santa Monday, December, 21, 2009

'All of the stories that have come in about giving have all had an element of risk about them. That's because giving is always risky. You're going to part with some of your money, your time, or your sweat and get nothing in return. You might not even be appreciated for it. You may not get any thanks. The recipient might not know whom to thank. You're going to better someone's life and slip away quietly out the back door, like a secret Santa that no one will ever find out about.

Are you okay with that? That's probably a good test for whether you are truly giving or not. Can you live with being anonymous? Does it matter to you? Is it your genuine joy to see someone happy or doing better because of your gift?

And what if you get taken when you give? Someone could be scamming you. And what if they are? What will you do? Become suspicious of everybody? Trust no one? Crawl inside yourself and never give again? No. You just keep on giving. Isn't that what God does?

Jesus said that when we give, we shouldn't let one hand know what the other hand is doing. In other words, give in secret. We're not getting any credit for this, so it shouldn't matter. We're not doing it for credit anyway.

When it comes to giving, remember what God does.

Everyone I know has failed me
Should I let them take that cross and nail me?
That's what God does.
That's what God does.
That's what God does.
Why can't we?

My comments below are intended to make people think and not about me being judgmental and critical. God has made me rethink many things in my life, and the last number of 'catches' have had me rethink Christ's whole entry into the world and how we can give love like Christ.

It is interesting how one 'word' by Marti can get so many responses while the catches that have to do with love get so little. Our biggest job on this earth is to love one another, would you like to get the Lord's performance appraisal on that particular task for each of us? After I read the book The Shack, demonstrating love became the biggest part of how I treated people, prior to that time.......well let's just say, I have asked the Lord for forgiveness.

Read in a book at one time,"If God had made love a spiritual gift a lot of us would say we did not possess it. Love is not a gift it is a command." When I read that I stood convicted. How many others out there do? Scripture can be summarized in one word "Obedience".

My business has for the last number of years made a donation to an organization that deals with mentally and physically challenged people. This year it seemed like the Lord was telling me to double the yearly figure. "In this economy" was my reaction. Last night on the news this christian organization had its director stating that funding for them will be cut back by the government and they were hoping and praying that they wouldn't have to cut back on programs. God knew this all the time! It will be a pleasure to write the cheque. Financially risky, absolutely! You can't outgive God. As good King Wenceslas said, ".....you yourself who bless the poor will yourself find blessing".

True giving is not "giving" unless it involves sacrifice. For many years I organized a Christmas Angel program through the schools & church, matching families in nneed with Angel families. It was totally anonymous. 2 things happened every year. When I called the families in need, there was always a couple that said, that's OK, we're fine, give gifts to someone needier (these families were identified by the school as most in need). The other response was "what can I do to help", what can WE give to others & often the next year or when they got on their feet, they did line up on the giving side,
Giving isn't giving if it's just your "extra". If it doesn't impact your budget, it's just reallocating. True giving is anonymous and many have a problem with that also. They wanted to deliver the gifts to the needy families so they would be recognized.
This is my first response though I'm a faithful reader and will support you in the New Year. Thank you for your giving.
