Naphtali

NOTES:
These songs were written during a period of time when I was building a biblical basis for the creative arts. A number of artists had come to work with our fledgling little ministry: Discovery Art Guild. These songs grew out of our life together (one of whom was Pam Mark Hall. Her song "Mary and Joseph" appears here). I was particularly taken one morning, when my eyes fell on this little passage in Genesis where Jacob blessed Naphtali by choosing a doe as his metaphor and giving him the task of giving birth to beautiful words. I took that as a creative mandate, first to Christian artists: that God cares about creative expression, and second to all believers as a call to live creatively. This album was recorded as a solo piece, but arranged for choir, and its accompanying choral book was released with a narrative weaving the songs together so they could be presented as a musical. The only narrative on the album is the following paragraph which is laid over the introduction to the opening theme song: "Naphtali."

"Naphtali. The son of Jacob, later to become one of the twelve tribes of Israel. On his deathbed, Jacob prophesied concerning Naphtali, "He is a doe set free; he gives beautiful words." A doe set free is a picture of being loosed from the bondage of selfishness into the freedom of God's Spirit. But this freedom is given for a purpose, that all we do might be a beautiful statement of the truth. This album is dedicated to the "Naphtali" in those who have believed in the Creator's Son, and have in their hearts, the freedom, beauty and truth of God's Spirit, ready to be lived out to a bored and lifeless generation."

Naphtali
Words and Music by John Fischer
(From Genesis 49:21)

Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words
Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words

We have been bound by fear and rejection
Now its time to see
That we were made to be the reflection
Of His creativity

Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words
Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words

We have the one who created the world
Living inside our bodies
There should be rivers, mountains and oceans
Flowing from our lives

Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words
Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words

So let the One who created before
Create again in you
Songs and poems and painted expressions
The glory of His truth

Naphtali is a doe set free
He gives beautiful words
Naphtali can be you or me
Taking God at his word

O God we thank Thee
That Thou hast given us of Thy Spirit
That all our living might be
Expressions of Thy love

We Are His Workmanship
Words and Music by John Fischer
(Taken from Ephesians 2:10)

We are His workmanship made by His craftsmanship
Each one made to be a vessel with a special design
To express truthfulness through works of righteousness
He prepared for us to walk in before the dawn of time

To each of us is given a purpose for living
To play our own part in His plan from the start
Each to show His beauty and His creativity
The part of His name no one else could proclaim

We are His workmanship made by His craftsmanship
Each one made to be a vessel with a special design
To express truthfulness through works of righteousness
He prepared for us to walk in before the dawn of time

We hold in our possession unique expressions
Talents and gifts that only He gives
He wants us all to use them and not to abuse them
They'll only be right when we walk in the light

We are His workmanship made by His craftsmanship
Each one made to be a vessel with a special design
To express truthfulness through works of righteousness
He prepared for us to walk in before the dawn of time

Don't Veil the Door
Words and Music by John Fischer

We are the holy of holies
Don't veil the door
Don't veil the door
We have His Spirit controlling
Don't hide the source
Don't hide the source

God wants to do a work in our lives
That will bring Him glory and fame
If we try to do it ourselves
We must wear veils of shame

We are the holy of holies
Don't veil the door
Don't veil the door
We have His Spirit controlling
Don't hide the source
Don't hide the source

Don't try to hide all your problems and sins
He can still maintain control
He wants the world to see all the steps
In the process of making you whole

We are the holy of holies
Don't veil the door
Don't veil the door
We have His Spirit controlling
Don't hide the source
Don't hide the source

You are a living temple of God
Walking around this earth
Open your doors and let them in
All the humble and lowly of birth

We are the holy of holies
Don't veil the door
Don't veil the door
We have His Spirit controlling
Don't hide the source
Don't hide the source

Work Out the Life
Words and Music by John Fischer
(From Philippians 2:12-15)

Work out the life God works in you
Day by day
It's His good pleasure to see you through
If you simply obey
He'll lead all of the way

You have a new mind and you have a new heart
Created by the king
You have a new hope and you have a new start
You don't lack a thing

Live out your years in humble fear
Love the Lord
As innocent children you'll appear
Like a mysterious light
In the darkest of night

You have a free spirit you have a new soul
Given you by the king
You don't have the pressure to make yourself whole
He had given you wings

Work out the life God works in you,
Day by day
It's His good pleasure to see you through
If you simply obey
He'll lead all of the way

Naphtali Arise

Naphtali arise
(Naphtali is a doe set free)
Lift your voice to the skies
(He gives beautiful words)
You've been bound too long
(Naphtali can be you or me)
Let the world hear your song
(Taking God at His word)

Angel's Song
(Words and Music by John Fischer)

In the town of Bethlehem
A king and ruler child was born
Not too many people noticed
Just some shepherds on their farm
Plus a few hundred thousand angels
Breaking the heavens with their song
And the rocks and the mountains joined them
For their time had come

God had promised a Redeemer
Through the prophet's willing tongue
Time had reached its culmination
To reveal His only Son
Born of a virgin child of the earth
With her seed conceived of God
Fully human but in His veins flowed
Precious godly blood

And that precious blood was soon
To be poured out in cruel death
For the healing of the nations
And all those who feel His breath
Lift up your voice and sing to the heavens
With the angels sing your song
Jesus has come to wipe out the darkness
Take us to His home

Even though today our nation
Celebrates this holy birth
Yet so few men truly know Him
If you do then sing this verse
Lift up your voice and sing to the heavens
With the angels sing your song.
Jesus has come to wipe out the darkness
Take us to His home.

Mary and Joseph
Words and Music by Pam Mark Hall

(Mary)
Joseph, my beloved, come walk with me a while
I have something to share with you this evening
An angel of God has appeared unto me
And this is the greeting that he gave me

The Spirit of God has overcome you
And you shall bear His child
And you shall call His name Jesus
For He'll save His people from sin

(Joseph)
Mary, O Mary, how can this be true
How can I believe the words you're saying
I've kept you a virgin, but now you are with child
How can I be sure you are not lying

(Mary)
Joseph, O Joseph, I've loved no other man
And I've served only one God Jehovah
Please know I am not deceiving you
I am only believing in His promise

The Spirit of God has overcome me
And I shall bear His child
And I shall call His name Jesus
For He'll save His people from sin

(Joseph)
Mary, my beloved, come walk with me a while
I have something to share with you this morning
An angel of God has appeared unto me
And this is the greeting that He gave me

The Spirit of God has overcome her
And she will bear His child
And you shall call His name Jesus
For He'll save His people from sin

(Mary)
The Spirit of God has overcome me
And I shall bear His child
(Mary and Joseph)
And we shall call His name Jesus
For He'll save His people from sin

Song for the Good Times
Words and Music by John Fischer
(Written in my first year of marriage.)

Life upon the mountain
Quiet peace inside.
Love flows from the fountain
He planted in my bride,
And I have everything I wished for
And a little bit more beside,
All from my Creator
Generously supplied.

Thank you Lord
Thank you Lord

Early in the morning
Sitting by the fireside,
A song comes without warning
As the first rays color the sky.
It's a song about my Father
And the wonderful things He's done
Offering full forgiveness
And life to everyone

Thank you Lord
Thank you Lord

You didn't have to do it
Fill me as much as You've done
I would have loved You anyway
If You'd just given me Your Son
But it seems like you send the good times
As well as the hard times too
To teach that the good times
Only come from you.

Thank you Lord
Thank you Lord

Live in the Power
Words and Music by John Fischer

Everybody
Wants to be wise and strong
Deep in your conscience
You know right from wrong
But good intentions
Don't seem to help at all
You lack the power
Equal to the call

You need the power
He has supplied to you
You can have it each hour
It's all there for you
By knowing the God of truth

When you believe Him
He gives you faith that's strong
You have the power
To avoid what is wrong
Wisdom and knowledge
Patience and self control
Brotherly kindness
Are planted in your soul

Live in the power
He has supplied to you
Live it each hour
It's all there for you
By knowing the God of truth

When in the moment
You need it right away
Act as you have it
You'll be surprised today
You will discover
You had it all along
'Cause you're a partaker
Of the one who is strong

Live in the power
He has supplied to you
Live it each hour
It's all there for you
By knowing the God of truth

Arise My Beloved
Words and Music by John Fischer
(From Song of Solomon 2:10-12. I've sung this at numerous weddings. As a matter of fact, the service that set up and runs this web site was a trade for my singing at the wedding of John and Tanya Homer of Rochester, New York in the summer of '96.)

Arise my beloved
My beautiful one
And come along
Come along
For lo, the winter is passed
And the rains have come and gone
Come along

He has given you virgin purity
And He has given me all that I need to be
Your lover and lord all the days that we dwell
On this earth

So arise my beloved
My beautiful one
And come along
Come along
For lo, the winter is passed
And the rains have come and gone
Come along

You who live your life like a frightened doe
Tensely watching and fearing the hunter's bow
He has brought in His kingdom where you can go
Free to be who you are

So arise my people
My beautiful ones
And come along
Come along
For lo the winter is passed
And the rains have come and gone,
Come along.

And arise my beloved
My beautiful one
And come along
Come along
